SUPERFLY
He's got a plan to stick it to the man!
Superfly stars Ron O'Neal (who sadly passed
away just last month) as Youngblood Priest,
a dope pusher after one last big score before
retiring. As much the movie glorifies violence,
drug use, etc. the excellent score by Curtis
Mayfield pushes hard the other way. The
result is straight up cool.
HORROR - Still waiting for DVDs of Sugar Hill, Dr. Black & Mr. Hyde, and Black the Ripper!
I've got a soft spot for
horror anthologies, and
this is a swell one.
Clarence Williams III is
excellent as always.
This is hands down one
of my favorite movies of
all time, period. For a
number of reasons, this
one really works for me
even better than the
original.
This is a surprisingly awful
movie. Doesn't even work
on its own terms. If you
want the bottom of the
barrel, this is it! You've
been warned! No, don't...
Not the first black horror
movie by a long shot
(they'd been around since
the 30s) but the one that
kicked off the black horror
subgenre of the 70s. Still
one of the best.
SHUT YOUR MOUTH - Just talkin' 'bout Shaft...
The first Shaft is a very
watchable action movie that
brought the blaxploitation
craze into the mainstream.
I haven't seen either of the sequels, but I've always been
curious about them. At this price, there's no reason not to check
them out.
REVOLUTIONARY CINEMA - Sounds better than 'miscellaneous,' doesn't it?
Not one of my personal
favorites, but there's no
questioning its influence; this
was the first movie to feature
a black revolutionary
anti-hero. Rated X by an
all-whyte jury.
Ed and Digger are city cops up
against a phony preacher with
a "back to Africa" plan.
Directed by Ossie Davis and
featuring the first film
appearance of Redd Foxx!
Recommended.
4 movies on 2 DVDs. They all
have their moments, but the
Billy Dee Williams vehicle The
Final Comedown is a low
budget revolutionary gem.
Power to the People!
BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL, BABY - And you'd better believe it.
This was the first
blaxploitation movie (and the
first Pam Grier movie) I ever
saw. She's quite a young
lady, and the story is
exploitative almost beyond
belief: drugs, prostitution,
catfights, political intrigue and
copious nudity are only a few
of the many delights Coffy
has to offer.
I've grown to love this big (for a
movie like this) budget Warner
Bros. reply to the AIP Pam Grier
vehicles. The casting is perfect,
with Tamara Dobson, Bernie
Casey, Antonio Fargas (the real
Huggy Bear) and Shelley
Winters(!) all acquitting
themselves admirably. I'm not
big on car chases, and luckily the
one in this movie is a separate
chapter, so you're through it with
the touch of a button.
